ZEISS DuraVision Platinum lenses are designed to be tough, dirt-resistant lenses that are easy to clean and provide uncompromised clarity. What makes ZEISS DuraVision Platinum AR lenses different? ZEISS DuraVision Platinum has been designed using an integrated system of coating layers that have been densely packed using ion-assisted deposition and resulting in a lens surface that is three times tougher than the previous generation of ZEISS AR. No other AR coating offers better scratch protection.

ZEISS DuraVision Platinum AR lenses also have a more cosmetically pleasing, blue residual reflex colour that reduces reflectance by up to 20% compared to conventional green AR coated lenses.

    Wiping a lens with a cloth creates static electricity, which attracts dust. DuraVision Platinum’s patented anti-static layer2 decreases the buildup of static electricity by over 90%, dramatically reducing dust on the lenses and keeping them clearer longer.

    DuraVision Platinum’s super-slick topcoat leads the pack in both oleophobic (oil-repelling) and super-hydrophobic (water-repelling) performance, making the lenses extraordinarily easy to clean. Droplets of water and oil literally make less contact with the lens, so it’s easier to wipe them off.

    The true measure of AR clarity is luminous reflectance: the lower the reflectance, the greater the clarity. The unique blue reflex colour of ZEISS DuraVision Platinum reduces luminous reflectance by over 20% compared to conventional green AR-coated lenses. The result is sharper vision, particularly in high-glare conditions like driving at night or working on a computer.

    1. Why are tough lenses important?
      Lenses need to be robust enough to resist damage in daily life. The tougher the lens surface, the more robust the lenses are.

    2. How is lens toughness defined?
      To find the best ways to evalaute the toughest ever ZEISS AR lenses using DuraVision Platinum, we looked at:
      - Other high-tech industries
      - The everyday life of a eyeglass wearer

    3. How does DuraVision Platinum perform in terms of toughness?
      DuraVision Platinum outperforms previous generations of ZEISS AR lenses in:
      - High-tech hardness testing
      - Real-life simulation tests
      - The Bayer ratio

    Hardness tests: using DIN ISO 14577

    Following the measurement setup as described in DIN ISO 14577 we used an indentation instrument to determine two critical properties of DuraVision Platinum:

    We measure the hardness in the depth range around 200 nanometers, this is the most critical range for visible scratches:

    To achieve scratches that go more than the critical 200 nm below the coating surface, DuraVision Platinum required a much higher amount of force to be applied than was needed for conventional AR coatings.

    At the same time, we also measured the force needed to completely break the coating:

    The total force needed to break the coating increased from 211 µN (conventional coatings) to 316 µN.

    What’s new:
    Similar technology has been used internationally in many different industries in which the hardness of material surfaces plays an important role, e.g. in the development and production of modern precision tools. But so far, it has not been applied to lenses.

    At the forefront of research:
    Indentation equipment precise enough for the extremely thin coating layers on eyeglass lenses has just recently been developed and was immediately integrated into the ZEISS research lab to help create the toughest ever ZEISS AR coating – DuraVision Platinum.

    600 wipes with 4kg pressure: DuraVision Platinum still looks like new.

    In daily life, most scratches occur when lenses are cleaned with a cloth that has dirt on it, either from abrasive dirt particles that are on the lens when the wiping starts or from dirt particles that are already in the cloth. In the SDWT we use an artificially soiled cloth to simulate damage caused by lens cleaning:

    • Cleaning procedure using standardized dust to soil cleaning cloth
    • Improvement in scratch resistance from previous generations of ZEISS AR coating to DuraVision Platinum after 600 wipes with 4 kg pressure.

    Bayer ratio

    • The Bayer ratio is a measure of the abrasion resistance of a (coated) surface to an oscillating abrasive medium (defined sand or similar).
    • The surface damage is assessed via the increase in scattered light resulting from the surface damage.
    • We follow the procedure set forth by the COLTS laboratory in the U.S.
    • (COLTS is the supplier-independent ophthalmic lens testing facility in the U.S.).

    Three times harder than previous generations of ZEISS AR.

    The use of an electron microscope with 3000x magnification makes the advantages of DuraVision Platinum clearly visible. While the previous generation of AR tears and peels, DuraVision Platinum only shows fine lines. Less scattered light is generated and a higher Bayer ratio is achieved.
