The effect of blue light on our vision is a growing topic of discussion as we are exposed to light waves with blue components both indoors and outdoors. On the one hand, we need blue light for a healthy body and our general well-being. On the other hand, blue light can be dangerous – especially in strong sunshine. We protect ourselves with sunglass lenses. However, we are now exposed to more blue light than ever before due to modern light sources such as LED lighting and the radiation emitted by digital devices. ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect is a special lens coating for people who spend a lot of their time indoors and are exposed to the potentially harmful blue light emitted by LEDs, televisions, computer screens or tablets and who are concerned about their exposure.
Too much light in the ultraviolet and blue-violet bands can permanently damage the human eye. Some studies suggest that long exposure to blue light below 460 nm (with a maximum at 440 nm) may lead to photochemical damage of the retina.
This damage may constitute a risk of macular degeneration in the long term.
