As a company owned by a foundation, sustainability and business success have been inextricably linked at ZEISS for 130 years. Worldwide, ZEISS Vision Care teams in development, production, logistics, service, IT and sales – to name just a few – are working to conserve resources, and to continue providing eye care solutions to help people see better.
The "Green, Safe, Responsible" project, which combines over 250 individual initiatives worldwide into a single global program for ZEISS Vision Care, is designed to help us better fulfil our responsibility each and every day. When it comes to many issues relating to sustainability, we recognise that we are still in the very early stages of making improvements, and we are working hard to achieve sustainable business practices across our entire company.
With this in mind, the following figures are important milestones for us and for vision care:
At ZEISS Vision Care, we ensure that less water, energy and plastic goes into the production of our eyeglasses and that less CO2 is emitted across the entire value chain – from the manufacture of semi-finished lenses all the way to final delivery. We will achieve carbon neutral energy consumption by 2022.
Millions of people across the globe, especially those in rural areas, don’t have access to any form of eye care. The main reason is that most developing or poor regions lack the professional and logistical capacity to deliver vision correction.
Together with our partners – including the Optometry Council, Optometry Colleges, SOS Children's Villages and Lions Club Karnataka – we organize and finance regular vision tests and vision care for disadvantaged children at children’s homes, rural schools and other locations in India.

As part of the Aloka Vision Programme, an initiative which focuses on providing local, sustainable care, ZEISS optometrists help local organisations and small business owners, including many women, to establish the provision of basic care. Profits from the sale of glasses are used to support our local partners.
